Exhibit envisions a path where women find justice

The images in “Visions Curses Blessings” create a narrative for the viewer to reflect on the role of women in religion.I believe there is a necessity for women to express their religious identity and explore the possibility that their quality of life can be shaped through self-prophecy.Prophecy, as defined in this story, is the ability to look into the future and envision a path toward justice between people. The photographs in this collection tell the story of a mythical prophet named Isa. Like the Hebrew prophet, Isaiah, she is employed in the royal court by the kings of her land. It is through her god’s words that she seese how she has failed to help bring justice to her people. Not only does her god call her to be an oracle to her natural brothers and sisters but also those who stand on the outside of their society, people who are treated as strangers in their own land. Ultimately, her people’s new awareness for self-prophecy allows them to realize respect for the environment, the importance of community and the ability to throw off the tyranny of religious oppression.Prophesying a better world for oneself and one’s children is only the first step in this journey. Self-prophecy can help anyone see a better world in the future, and it can also create a road map for change today.
